The Center of Coffeeshop Culture
Amsterdam’s Centrum district — spanning the Red Light District (De Wallen), Dam Square, Leidseplein, and the Grachtengordel canal ring — contains the highest concentration of coffeeshops in the city. This is where the industry began in the 1970s, where the Cannabis Cup was held for 27 years, and where the most recognized names in global cannabis operate today.
The trade-off is obvious: Centrum shops carry a tourist premium. Expect to pay €2–4 more per gram than in neighborhoods like De Pijp or Oost. The atmosphere at the most famous venues skews heavily toward visitors, especially in summer. But the quality is generally excellent, the selection is the widest in the city, and the historic significance is real.
Since May 2023, public cannabis smoking is banned in the Red Light District, Dam Square, Damrak, and Nieuwmarkt. The fine is €100. Smoke inside the coffeeshop, not on the street outside.
The Bulldog
The First & The Palace
The Bulldog is Amsterdam’s most commercially recognized coffeeshop brand, with five locations across Centrum. The franchise began in 1975 when Henk de Vries opened a small venue that would become “The First” at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 90, in the heart of the Red Light District. It is widely considered one of the first commercial coffeeshops in Amsterdam, though several others contest the claim.
The flagship location is “The Palace” at Leidseplein 15–17, housed in a former police station — a conversion that carries a certain irony given the building’s history. The Palace is large, loud, and unambiguously aimed at tourists. It is not the place for a quiet smoke, but it is an institution.
- Address (The First): Oudezijds Voorburgwal 90 (Red Light District)
- Address (The Palace): Leidseplein 15–17
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 1:00 AM daily
- Character: Touristy, loud, brand-driven. Not where locals go, but historic.
- Best for: First-timers who want a no-surprises, recognizable entry point
Dampkring
Dampkring at Handboogstraat 29 became internationally famous when it appeared in Ocean’s Twelve (2004) — Brad Pitt and George Clooney filmed a scene at the counter. The shop leans into this history without being defined by it. The interior is psychedelic: hand-painted murals, mosaic tiling, and a warm amber glow that makes the whole room feel like the inside of a lava lamp.
A resident cat typically roams the premises. The milkshakes (€4–5) are excellent and a signature order. The hash menu is where Dampkring truly distinguishes itself — look for Tbizla, Dahab Ketama, and King Hassan, all premium Moroccan imports that are difficult to find elsewhere. The flower menu is solid but secondary to the hash selection.
- Address: Handboogstraat 29
- Hours: 10:00 AM – 1:00 AM daily
- Known for: Hash (Moroccan imports), psychedelic interior, milkshakes, Ocean’s Twelve
- Price range: Mid-to-premium (€10–18/gram flower, €12–25/gram hash)
- Best for: Hash enthusiasts, atmosphere seekers, film fans
Green House
Green House at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 191 is the empire of Arjan Roskam, sometimes called the “King of Cannabis.” The brand has won over 40 Cannabis Cup awards, more than any other coffeeshop chain, and operates five locations across Amsterdam. The flagship on Oudezijds Voorburgwal sits directly on the canal with a small outdoor terrace — one of the few coffeeshops where you can smoke with a canal view.
Green House has hosted an improbable roster of celebrity visitors over the decades. The strain menu reflects the brand’s breeding pedigree — expect proprietary genetics developed by Green House Seed Company. Prices are at the top of the Centrum range, but the consistency is reliable.
- Address: Oudezijds Voorburgwal 191
- Locations: 5 across Amsterdam
- Known for: 40+ Cannabis Cup wins, canal terrace, celebrity history, proprietary genetics
- Price range: Premium (€12–20/gram)
- Best for: Award-winning strains, canal-side setting, cannabis history
Grey Area
Grey Area at Oude Leliestraat 2 is a paradox: one of the most acclaimed coffeeshops in the world, crammed into a space with eight seats. Founded in 1994 by Jon Foster from Michigan, it is one of the few American-owned coffeeshops in Amsterdam and has won over 25 Cannabis Cup awards — an extraordinary ratio of trophies to square footage.
The signature strains are Grey Haze and Silver Bubble, both developed in-house. Hip-hop plays on the sound system. The walls are covered in stickers, awards, and graffiti. There is almost always a queue outside, especially on weekends and in summer. The limited hours mean you need to plan your visit.
- Address: Oude Leliestraat 2
- Hours: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM daily
- Capacity: 8 seats
- Known for: 25+ Cannabis Cup wins, Grey Haze, Silver Bubble, hip-hop, tiny space
- Price range: Premium (€14–20/gram)
- Best for: Connoisseurs, Cup-winning genetics, the experience of a legendary micro-coffeeshop
Grey Area opens at noon and closes at 8 PM — much shorter hours than most coffeeshops. Arrive early on weekends or expect a queue. The tiny space means you may need to smoke and go rather than linger.
Barney’s
Barney’s at Haarlemmerstraat 102 is one of the few coffeeshops in Amsterdam that opens at 7:00 AM, serving a full breakfast menu alongside its cannabis offerings. Founded by Derry Brett, the brand has accumulated over 40 Cannabis Cup awards through its Barney’s Farm seed company, placing it alongside Green House as the most decorated coffeeshop in Amsterdam.
Free Volcano vaporizers are available at every table. Across the street, Barney’s Lounge serves food in a more relaxed sit-down setting (no cannabis consumption at the Lounge, but you can eat there after smoking at the main shop). The combination of breakfast, cannabis, and vaporizers makes this a natural morning destination.
- Address: Haarlemmerstraat 102
- Hours: 7:00 AM – 1:00 AM daily
- Known for: 40+ Cup wins, 7 AM breakfast, free Volcanos, Barney’s Farm genetics
- Price range: Mid-to-premium (€10–18/gram)
- Best for: Early risers, breakfast-and-smoke, vaporizer fans
Tweede Kamer
Tweede Kamer (“Second Chamber,” a nod to the Dutch parliament) at Heisteeg 6 near Spui has been operating since 1985. It pioneered a practice that is now universal: weighing cannabis in front of the customer. Before Tweede Kamer, it was common for coffeeshops to pre-bag quantities, and short-changing was not unheard of. The transparency standard they established became industry norm.
The staff are often described as cannabis sommeliers — they will walk you through flavor profiles, effects, and pairings with genuine expertise. The hash selection is among the most extensive in Amsterdam. This is a connoisseur’s coffeeshop in a tourist neighborhood.
- Address: Heisteeg 6 (near Spui)
- Hours: 8:00 AM – 1:00 AM daily
- Known for: Cannabis sommeliers, pioneered transparent weighing, extensive hash menu, since 1985
- Price range: Mid-to-premium (€10–18/gram)
- Best for: Hash lovers, expert guidance, connoisseurs who want knowledgeable staff
More Centrum Coffeeshops Worth Visiting
Abraxas
Jonge Roelensteeg 12. A bohemian three-story venue with hand-laid mosaics, Gaudí-inspired curves, and a rooftop room. The interior design alone is worth the visit. The menu is solid mid-range. Quieter than most Centrum shops despite its central location.
420 Café
Oudebrugsteeg 27. A straightforward coffeeshop near Centraal Station known for its space cakes, which are popular with tourists looking for edible options. The café atmosphere is casual and unpretentious. Good selection of pre-rolls for those who do not want to roll their own.
Het Ballonnetje
Roetersstraat 12. Operating since 1978, this is one of Amsterdam’s oldest surviving coffeeshops and a genuine local haunt. The vibe is neighborhood bar, not tourist attraction. Prices are lower than the Centrum average, and the clientele is predominantly Dutch.
Prix d’Ami
Haringpakkerssteeg 3. Billed as the “world’s largest coffeeshop,” with seating for approximately 500 people across multiple rooms. The venue includes cinema rooms showing films, pool tables, and lounge areas. The cannabis menu is straightforward, but the sheer scale and entertainment options make it unique in Amsterdam. If you want a social, activity-filled cannabis experience rather than a quiet smoke, this is the place.
