How Coffeeshop Pricing Works

Amsterdam coffeeshop prices are quoted per gram and include all taxes (there is no separate tax added at checkout, unlike US dispensaries). You can buy as little as one gram and as much as five grams in a single transaction. Most visitors spend €15–25 per coffeeshop visit, including a drink.

Prices vary significantly by neighborhood and product tier. The same strain can cost €12 in De Pijp and €16 in the Red Light District. This is a location premium, not a quality difference. The cannabis supply chain for Amsterdam coffeeshops is concentrated enough that many shops source from the same growers.

Cash is preferred or required at most coffeeshops. Some accept debit cards with PIN, but credit cards are rarely accepted. Always carry euros.

Flower (Wiet) Price Tiers

Budget Dutch Flower — €7–10/gram

The entry-level tier consists of domestically grown Dutch strains, typically indica-dominant or simple hybrid genetics. These are not bad — Dutch indoor cultivation produces consistently decent cannabis — but they lack the complexity, bag appeal, and THC potency of higher tiers. THC content is typically 15–20%. Suitable for casual smokers, first-timers, or anyone rolling multiple joints throughout the day.

Common strains: Dutch Haze, Power Plant, White Widow (basic cuts), Holland’s Hope

Mid-Range — €10–14/gram

The sweet spot for most visitors. Mid-range flower includes named genetics from respected seed companies, better trichome coverage, stronger terpene profiles, and THC content of 18–25%. This is where you find the classic Amsterdam strains that built the city’s reputation.

Common strains: Amnesia Haze, White Widow (premium cuts), Northern Lights, Super Silver Haze, AK-47, Cheese, Jack Herer

Premium — €14–20/gram

Top-shelf Dutch-grown flower from award-winning genetics. Expect dense, trichome-covered buds with complex flavor profiles and THC content of 22–30%. This tier includes Cup-winning strains from Green House, Barney’s, Grey Area, and other decorated coffeeshops. The difference between mid-range and premium is real — better cure, better trim, better genetics, and a noticeably more refined experience.

Common strains: Grey Haze, Silver Bubble, Tangerine Dream, Liberty Haze, Barney’s-exclusive genetics, Green House Cup winners

“Cali” Imports — €20–35+/gram

The most expensive tier on Amsterdam menus consists of flower marketed as “Cali” — imported from California, sometimes from other US states or Spain. These arrive vacuum-sealed and are priced at a steep premium. THC content is typically 25–35% with exceptional bag appeal: dense, colorful, heavily frosted buds.

Cali Imports: Buyer Beware

Not all “Cali” flower is actually from California. Some coffeeshops relabel high-quality Dutch or Spanish flower as Cali to justify the premium price. If a coffeeshop is charging €30/gram for “Cali,” ask where it was actually grown. Reputable shops will be transparent. If they cannot or will not answer, you are likely paying a branding premium for Dutch weed.

Hash (Hasj) Price Tiers

Amsterdam has a deep hash culture, far deeper than most US cannabis markets. The Netherlands’ proximity to Morocco — the world’s largest hash-producing country — means that high-quality traditional hash is widely available. Dutch-made water hash and ice-o-lator add a modern dimension.

Basic Moroccan — €4–8/gram

Traditional dry-sift Moroccan hash, pressed and imported. Color ranges from sandy blonde to dark brown. Effects are mellow and body-heavy. The cheapest cannabis product in most coffeeshops. Quality varies — budget hash can be harsh or contain plant material.

Premium Moroccan — €8–15/gram

Higher-grade Moroccan imports: Tbizla, Dahab Ketama, King Hassan. These are finer sifts with better trichome isolation, resulting in smoother smoke, stronger effects, and more complex flavor. Dampkring and Tweede Kamer have some of the best selections in this tier.

Ice-O-Lator / Water Hash — €12–25/gram

Ice-o-lator (also called water hash or bubble hash) is made by agitating cannabis flower in ice water, separating trichome heads from plant material through mesh bags. The result is a solvent-free concentrate that is purer and more potent than traditional hash. Club Media in De Pijp is widely regarded as having the best ice-o-lator in Amsterdam. Premium ice-o-lator can reach 50–70% THC.

Pre-Rolled Joints — €3.50–15

Pre-rolls are available at virtually every coffeeshop and are the easiest entry point for visitors who do not know how to roll. Prices depend on the strain quality, joint size, and whether the pre-roll is pure cannabis or mixed with a tobacco substitute.

  • €3.50–5: Small joints with budget flower or a Greengo/damiana mix
  • €5–8: Standard joints with mid-range pure cannabis
  • €8–12: Large joints or premium strains
  • €12–15: Premium pre-rolls with top-shelf genetics or hash-infused

Note: pre-rolls at coffeeshops are pure cannabis (no tobacco), in compliance with the indoor smoking ban. If you want a tobacco mix, you will need to roll your own and smoke outside.

Space Cakes & Edibles — €5–8

Amsterdam’s edible market is nothing like the precision-dosed US market. Space cakes (cannabis brownies) are the dominant edible format. They have no standardized dosing — no mg labels, no lab testing results, no consistent potency from one batch to the next. This is the single most common source of bad tourist experiences in Amsterdam.

  • Price: €5–8 per cake/brownie
  • Onset: 30–90 minutes (sometimes longer on a full stomach)
  • Duration: 4–8 hours (can feel like forever if you take too much)
  • Best source: Paradox in the Jordaan (widely considered the best and most consistent space cakes in Amsterdam)
Space Cake Survival Rule

Start with one-third of the cake. Wait 90 minutes. If you feel nothing, eat another third. Never eat the whole thing at once, especially on your first visit. Paradox’s space cakes are particularly potent. See our full Space Cake Survival Guide.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Leave Centrum. The same quality flower costs €2–4 less per gram in De Pijp, Jordaan, or the outer neighborhoods.
  • Buy by the gram. Try a gram of several strains rather than committing to 3–5 grams of one you might not like.
  • Ask about daily specials. Some coffeeshops offer discounted strains or pre-rolls that are not on the main menu board.
  • Share with friends. One gram rolled into a joint is plenty for 2–3 people. Splitting costs makes premium strains affordable.
  • Use vaporizers. Vaporizing is more efficient than combustion. A gram lasts longer in a Volcano than in a joint.
  • Skip the “Cali.” Unless you can verify the provenance, premium Dutch flower at €14–18/gram is a better value than questionable “Cali” at €25–35.
Carry Cash

Most coffeeshops are cash-only or cash-preferred. Withdraw euros before your coffeeshop visit. ATMs are plentiful in Amsterdam but charge €2–5 per withdrawal for non-EU cards. Withdraw enough for the day in one transaction.
